Name derivation:

Golden cell  chryso- (Gr.) golden, cyst (Gr.) cell

 

Classification:

Chrysocystis  Lobban, D. Honda and Chihara 1995;  one species (C. fragilis) has been described and is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Sarcinochrysidales;  Family Sarcinochrysidaceae

Sometimes placed in Class Pelagophyceae within the Ochrophytes (Ibid.).

 

Morphology:

Macroscopic gelatinous colonies with cells on periphery.

 

Similar genera:

Habitat:

Marine subtropical to tropical, benthic, shallow to ~ 45 m depth.   Reported from Guam (Lobban et al. 1995) and the Great Barrier Reef, Australia (Schaffelke et al. 2004)..
