Name derivation:

Golden cloud  chryso- (Gr.) golden, nephos (Gr.) cloud

 

Classification:

Chrysonephos  W.R. Taylor, 1952;  one species (C. lewisii) has been described and is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Sarcinochrysidales;  Family Sarcinochrysidaceae

Sometimes placed in Class Pelagophyceae within the Ochrophytes (Ibid.).

 

Morphology:

Mainly uniseriate filament with dichotomous branching, oblique divisions on older filaments cause irregular multiseriate regions.  Clouds up to 4 cm high.

 

Similar genera:

Habitat:

Marine subtropical to tropical, benthic, shallow to ~ 45 m depth.
