Classification:

Petalonema M.M.Berkeley ex C.Correns, 1898;  9 of 12 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2017).

Order Nostocales; Family Scytonemataceae

Morphology:

Filaments with false brahcnihg and solitary intercalary heterocysts (a.k.a. heterocytes).  Firm sheaths are very thck and distinctly funnel-lie lamellated, colorless or yellow-brown.  Apical cells always rounded.

Habitat:

Tropical; subaerophytic or freshwater epiliths.
