Name derivation:

From the Greek aulos , a pipe, tube, and seira , a chain

Classification:

Aulosira  Kirchner ex Bornet and Flahault  1886;  10 of 19 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Nostocales;  Family Nostocaceae

Morphology:

Uniseriate trichomes enclosed in firm individual sheaths, occurring singly or sometimes in clusters, but never in mats. Occasional heterocysts occur at regular intervals along the trichome and are slightly larger than the vegetative cells.

Habitat:

Benthic in unpolluted lakes and ponds, among plants and sticks.  Several species are important nitrogen fixers in rice fields.  Especially abundant in the tropics.
