Morphology: |
||||
Uniseriate trichomes enclosed in firm individual sheaths, occurring singly or sometimes in clusters, but never in mats. Occasional heterocysts occur at regular intervals along the trichome and are slightly larger than the vegetative cells. |

Habitat: |

Benthic in unpolluted lakes and ponds, among plants and sticks. Several species are important nitrogen fixers in rice fields. Especially abundant in the tropics. |
