Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Wollea  Bornet and Flahault 1886;  5 of 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Nostocales   Family Nostocaceae

 

Morphology:

Photosynthetic parallel untapered trichomes embedded in a common mucilage sheath.  Individual trichomes have no sheath.  Intercalary heterocysts are surrounded on both sides by short series of akinetes.

Similar genera:

The non-heterocyte-bearing Microcoleus also has bundles of parallel trichomes embedded in a common sheath.

Habitat:

Stagnant freshwater, attached to a substrate or planktonic.
