Classification:

Pedinella Vysotskii 1887; 4 of 12 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Class Dictyochophyceae;  Order Pedinellales

Morphology:

Barrel-shaped unicells ~10 µm diameter, with ridges along each of six elongate chloroplasts.  Nucleus in center of cell.One apical flagellum surrounded by a ring of six short tentacles.  Attached to a substrated by a relatively long cytoplasmic stalk extending from the posterior end of the cell, or the stalk may detach and the cell is then planktonic.

Habitat:

Shallow brackish habitats.  Uncommon, reported from northern Europe.
