Classification:

Pseudopedinella N. Carter  1937;  6 of 10 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Class Dictyochophyceae;  Order Pedinellales

 

Morphology:

Barrel-shaped unicells, broadest at the apex, with six (rarely three) elongate golden chloroplasts.  Anterior tentacles sometimes present.  One anterior flagellum 3-5 times the cell length. A contractile pseudopodium 0.5-6x cell length protrudes from the posterior end of the cell does not attach to a substrate (Ibid.).

Habitat:

Common in both freshwater and marine plankton from the Arctic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea (Ibid.).
