Classification:

Amphidiniopsis  Woloszynska  1928;  all 16 of 16 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Peridiniales   Family Thecadiniaceae or Amphidiniopsidaceae

Morphology:

Colorless motile dinoflagellate with strongly displaced descendent cingulum rendering epicone and hypocone quite asymmetric.  Epicone much smaller than hypocone.  No thecal plates.  Essentially oval in ventral and dorsal views.

Similar genera:

Amphidinium also has a relatively small epicone.

Habitat:

Marine psammolitteral (in sand), occasionally washed into plankton (Guiry and Guiry 2013).
