Name derivation

Gr. hemisys - half;  Gr. dinos - whirling

 

Classification:

Hemidinium  Stein  1878;  16 of 24 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Thoracosphaerales; Family Glenodiniaceae

Morphology:

Flagellated unicells, either colorless phagocytes or photosynthetic mixotrophs, with cingulum located near the basal end.  No heavy cellulose plates (unarmored).

Habitat:.

Freshwater, estuarine and marine plankton:  Ubiquitous.
