Morphology: |

Unicells, spheroid to pyriform,
desmokont (two anterior flagella), armored with two lateral valves. Some have
an anterior winged spine or “tooth”, others have various surface
decorations (various patterns of short spines or pores). |

Many benthic species are toxic
