Name derivation:

Early (Proto-) Peridinium

Classification:

Protoperidinium Bergh, 1882;  319 of 366 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Peridiniales;  Family Protoperidiniaceae

Morphology:

Heterotrophic dinoflagellate lacks chloroplasts, often contains numerous red oil droplets.

Habitat:

Marine plankton.
