Currently 9 recognized species.

Also classified as a Tribophyte.

Related: Trichloridella paradoxa P.C. Silver, Pleurochloridella botryodopsis Pascher and Pleurochloridella vaculota Pascher.. 

Morphology:

Spherical cells 10 - 20 mm diameter.

Similar genera:

Identification is uncertain, easily confused with Vischeria and Nannochloropsis (Eustigmatophyceae), Chlorellidium and Pleurococcus (Tribophyceae), or even Chlorella (Chlorophyceae).

 

Habitat:

Epineustonic (in air, sitting on the surface film of water) in organically rich pools (Guiry and Guiry 2012).

Reported in Lake Cariahue, Argentina (Temporetti et al. 2008), and the Antarctic Peninsula (Australian Antarctic Data Centre).

Also reported in algal cultures of surface soil profiles in northern Egypt, as in the Nile valley (Shaaban et al. 2000).
