Name derivation:

"Green cluster" -- Green Chloro- cluster –botrys

Classification:

Chlorobotrys Bohlin, 1901;  6 of 12 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Eustigmatales;  Family Chlorobothryaceae.

 

Morphology:

Spherical cells, one or two within a mucilaginous sheath, forming colonies of up to 32 cells. Two species are currently recognized -- C. stellata and C. regularis (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).

Similar genera:

Some species are synonymous with Vischeria and Chlorococcum species, including V. punctata, V. stellata and Chlorobotrys stellata; and Chlorobotrys regularis and Chlorococcum regularis (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).

Habitat:

Freshwater acid bogs and fens. Found in North America in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin USA, as well as in British Columbia Canada (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).
