Name derivation:

"False Staurastrum" (a desmid) -- False Pseudo-

Classification:

Pseudostaurastrum  R.Chodat  1921;  4 of 16 species descriptions are currently recognized taxonomically.

Pseudostaurastrum is also used as a synonym of Isthmochloron (Tribophyceae).

Morphology:

Tetrahedral unicells with four "fingers" (projections) at the end of each arm. Produces uniflagellate zoospores (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).

Similar genera:

Staurastrum (Charophyceae) has a superficially similar outline.

Habitat:

Bog plankton; often associated with Sphagnum or sedges. In North America Pseudostaurastrum has been collected in Alaska and Minnesota USA (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).
