Name derivation:

Apparently named in honor of Wilhelm Vischer of Basel, Switzerland, who developed methods of isolating and culturing algae (Vischer 1926), and published at least from 1926 - 1960 as referenced in Gärtner (1985).

Classification:

Vischeria  Pascher  1937;  4 of 12 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Family Eustigmataceae

Polyedriella is considered a synonym in Phycokey.

Morphology:

Unicells that are spherical, polyhedral, or iffegular in shape, 7-20 µm, with one or several chloroplasts (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).

Similar genera:

Some species are synonymous with Chlorobotrys and Polyedriella species, including V. punctata, V. stellata and C. Stellata; and V. helvetica and P. helvetica (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).

Habitat:

Freshwater bogs, dystrophic and mesotrophic onds, often associated with Sphagnum and other aquatic plants in organically rich waters. Collected in Minnesota and Alaska USA (Ott and Oldham-Ott 2003).
