Name derivation:

Classification:

Botryella V.P. Shuysky 1987; there are five species descriptions, four of which are accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2015).

Order Bryopsidales; Family Codiaceae

Previously called Polytretus reinboldii, transferred to Botrytella by Taskin and Pedersen (2012).

 

Morphology:

Brown trichomes with numerous small discoid chloroplasts per cell. Reproductive structure is a unilocular sporocarp arranged in clusters.

 

Similar genera:

Ectocarpus fasciculosis also has unilocular sporocarps but not in clusters, as well as a single irregular ribbon-shaped chloroplast per cell.

 

Habitat:

Marine and estuarine habitats.
