Name derivation:

Gr. Hydro- water, clathrus lattuce

Classification:

Hydroclathrus  Bory  1825;  4 of 7 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Ectocarpales;  Family Scytosiphonaceae

Morphology:

Heteromorphic life cycle where both gametophytes and sporophytes are macroscopic.    Gametophytes are erect, amorphous to spherical, highly porous with plurilocular gametangia.  Sporophytes are prostrate and develop both plurilocular and unilocular sporangia (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Tropical to temperate marine habitats including Florida, Bermuda, the Caribbean, gulf of Mexico, Brazil, eastern north and tropical Atlantic, the Mediterranean, Indo-Pacific and Australia (Ibid.).
