Name derivation:

Classification:

Sporochnus  C. Agardh  1817;  12 of 41 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry2016).

Order Sporochnales;  Family Sporochnaceae

 

Morphology:

Erect thallus is wiry with alternate to irregular branching and a distinct main axis.  Branchlets terminate with filamentous tufts charqachteristic of genera in Order Sporochnaceae (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

 

Similar genera:

Habitat:

Marine subtropical habitats.  Reported from Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Antilles, Gulf of Mexico, Brazil and the Canary Islands (Ibid.).
