Name derivation:

Classification:

Centroceras  Kützing 1842;  17 of 35 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Subclass Florideophyceae; Order Ceramiales;  Family Ceramiaceae

 

Morphology:

Filaments in bushy tufts, usually dichotomously branched with lateral cortication, attached by basal and lateral rhizoids.Cells uninucleate with many discoid plastids.Dioecious gametophytes (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Similar genera:

Ceramium and Corallophila (Ibid.).

Habitat:e

Widespread in subtropical and tropical coasts on mangrove roots, shells and limestone (Ibid.)
