Name derivation:

eu- (Gr.) – true, + cheuma – molten or poured

Classification:

Eucheuma  J. Agardh, 1847;  30 of 58 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2008).

Synonym  of E. isiforme (C. Agardh) J. Agardh 1847 is Hypnea wurdemannii Harvey 1853.

 

Morphology:

Cartilaginous with radial to bilateral branching, often with papillae.  Medulla of axis is filamentous and compact, or a mix of large cells and thin rhizoidal filaments.  Inner cortex has large hyaline cells, outer cortex has small pigmented cells (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Similar genera:

Hypnea, Sphaerococcus.

Habitat:

Coasts of North Carolina, Florida, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Philippines (Ibid.)
