Name derivation:

After Henry Grinnell, American botanist from New York.

Classification:

Grinnellia  Harvey  2853;  2 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Subclass Florideophyceae; Order Ceramiales; Family Delesseriaceae

 

Morphology:

Large monostromatic membranous thallus with short stipes attached with discoid holdfasts.  Obviouis midribs near the bas, inconspicuous above (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Similar genera:

Basonym of G. americana: Delesseria americana. C. Agardh 1822.

 

Habitat:

Temperate to subtropical coasts, uncommon (Ibid.).
