Name derivation:

(Gr.) hypo lower, glossum  tonguelike

Classification:

Hypoglossum  Kützing  1843;  30 of 69 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Subclass Florideophyceae; Order Ceramiales; Family Delesseriaceae

 

Morphology:

Erect bushy thallus attached with small discoid holdfasts.  Slender, flat, brahched blades with an obvious midrib.  Species vary in height from a few mm (H. subsimplex to > 1 m (H. tenuifolium) (Dawes and Mathieson).

Similar genera:

Many species are separated from the basonym Delesseria Lamouroux 1813.

Habitat:

Subtropical to tropical marine shores.
