Jania  J.V. Lamouroux  1812;  49 of 118 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Corallinales;  Family Corallinaceae

 

Morphology:

Heavily calcified erect thallus, bushy and articulate.  Branching mostly dichotomous. Relatively small, on the order of a few mm to a few cm tall.  Dioecious gametophytes (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).  More online.

Habitat:

Tropical and subtropical habitats, epiphytic or epilithic on limestone.  Annuals.  Grow faster with lower phosphate (an inhibitor of calcite crystalization)(Guiry and guiry 2016).
