Name derivation:

spyris (Gr.) – a basket or reel

Classification:

Spyridia  Harvey 1833;  15 of 59 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Subclass Florideophyceae; Order Ceramiales; Family Spyridiaceae

Morphology:

Bushy thallus up to 20 cm long.  Corticated uniseriate filaments with widespread branching.  Tips of branches taper to a point (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Habitat:

Subtropical to tropical marine coasts, widespread (Ibid.).
