Classification:

Thorea  Bory de Saint-Vincent 1808;  12 of 19 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Thoreales; Family Thoreaceae

Morphology:

Branched uniseriate filaments as long as 200 cm, 0.5 – mm diameter.Colorless axis filament with dense photosynthetic lateral branches.  Reddish-brown, olive-green, blue-green to nearly black.  More detail online (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

 

Similar species:

Batrachospermum has a similar axial trichome with dense lateral branches.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater, tropical to warm temperate alkaline streams.
