October 18, 2016: Cochichewick |
Actinosphaerium sp., a heliozoan amoeba with bristle-like pseudopods that collect bacteria |
Anabaena sp., note 'polar plugs' at each side of heterocyst that resists oxygen diffusion from adjacent photosynthetic 'vegetative' cells. |
Aphanizomenon flos-aquae rafts at various magnifications. Note hyaline cells at end of trichomes. |
Asterionella formosa |
Ceratium hirundella
Coenococcus planktonicus
Dictyosphaerium pulchellum - Note connections fabricated from remnants of the parent cell wall.
Dinobryon - Lower image is D. pediformis - note shape of base of lorica
Pandorina sp. - a memberof the volvocine line of flagellated green colonies
Euglena sp. - Note the two large elliptical starch storage bodies, the striated proteinaceous pellicle that lines the inside of the outer cell membrane, and the red eyespot.
Fragilaria crotonensis from Lake Cochichewick, North Andover MA, USA |
Gloeocapsa with invisible sheath
Gloeocystis sp.
A rotifer - Keratella - surrounded by Tabellaria colonies
Melosira cf. granulata - twin trichomes in lower image
Micractinium with long cellulose bristles
Oedogonium sp. - Note series of 'rings' fabricated from several cell divisions where one end of a parent cell splits from the remainder of the cell wall. As the daughter cell grows in length the remainder of the parent cell wall is pushed away, and the new daughter cell wall forms in between the two very uneven portions of the parent wall.
Oocystis - a packet of four cells
Oscillatoria sp. along side of an Oedogonium trichome (out of focus)
Rhizosolenia longiseta
Staurastrum. spp.
Synedra cf. acus
Tabellaria flocculosa - two forms of colony - note 'glue pad' secreted by cells, holding cells together.
Xanthidium antelopean. Cell is buried in debris in upper image. Note distinct sheath in lower image; thick black boundary is light refraction at boundary of water/air under cover slip.
Actinochloris sphaerica - green unflagellated unicell surrounded by a thick sheath.
Unidentified colony of spheres, possibly eggs. Green 'egg' on right has the same dark region as the unpigmented 'eggs'.
