Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Brachytheca  Gontcharov and Watanabe  1999;  the two species description are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

 

Morphology:

Unicells, cylindrical, with no isthmus constriction, truncate on the ends, with or without longitudinal grooves, and with circular rows of pores on walls.  Stellate chloroplasts.

Similar genera:

Hyalotheca has somewhat similar simple cell shape but forms trichomes (never seen in Brachytheca) (Gontcharov and Watanabe 1999).

 

Habitat:

Freshwater littoral aufwuchs and/or benthos.  Reported originally from the highlands (3,600 – 3,800 m ASL) Papua New Guinae (Gontcharov and Watanabe 1999) and secondly from New Zealand (Fumanti and Alfinito 2004).
