Name derivation:

 

Classification

Genicularia  De Bary  1858;  both of 2 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Gonatozygaceae

 

Morphology:

Elongate bisymmetric cells 200-427 µm in length with truncate ends. Two or three spiraling band-like chloroplasts with may pyrenoids per cell (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

 

Similar genera:

At first glimpse similar to individual cells of Spirulina because of spiraling chloroplasts.

 

Habitat:

Somewhat acidic freshwater lakes.  Reported only from North America and Eurasia, but rarely.
