Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Spinoclosterium  C.Bernard  1909;  2 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Closteriaceae

Some authors consider Spinoclosterium to be a synonym of Closterium cuspidatum (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Morphology:

Green unicells, elongate and curved, with a spine at each end.  No isthmus – cell width is the same where the two hemicell walls meet as the adjacent regions;  width tapers toward both ends of cell.  Two chloroplast with scattered pyrenoids.  Crystals are present in terminal vacuoles.

Similar genera:

Closterium lacks terminal spines.

Habitat:

Somewhat acidic and oligotrophic lakes and Sphagnum-dominated bogs.
