Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Spinocosmarium  Prescott & A.M.Scott  1942;  both of 2 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Family Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

 

Morphology:

Similar to Cosmarium, with a pair of opposing spines on each hemicell (Gerrath 2003).

 

Similar genera:

Cosmarium lacks spines.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater oligotrophic and acidic lakes.  Endemic to North America (Gerrath 2003).
