Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Triplastrum  Iyengar and Ramanathan  1942;  3 of 6 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and guiry 2013).

Order Desmidiales   Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Green elongate unicells up to 85µm long.  Nearly rectangular in long view, with median isthmus only slightly indented, and three short lobes at each slightly widened end.  One or two parietal chloroplasts in each hemicell.

 

Similar genera:

 

 

Habitat:

Found in rice fields in India, in swamps in Africa, and one lake in France (lac de Grand-Lieu). Rarely reported.
