Name derivation:

“Spindle thread”   -- Spindle Elakato- thread –thrix

 

Classification:

Elakatothrix  Wille  1898;  14 of 17 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Klebsormidiales;  Family Elakatotrichaceae

 

Morphology:

Strongly elliptical individual cells can be found on their own or in a colony. The colony has an indefinite shape as it is formed of the individual cells sticking in a gelatinous mass at random. Each individual cell has a single parietal chloroplast.

Freshwater.
