Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Prasiola  Meneghini  1838;  34 of 61 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Prasiolales; Family Prasiolaceae

 

Morphology:

Undivided monostromatic green blades up to 15 - 45 mm across, with a pluriseriate stipe.  Cells generally rectangular, 5 – 9 μm in diameter.

 

Similar genera:

Prasiolopsis, Pseudopleuococcus and Schizogonium Kutzing 1843 are not separated from Prasiola in PhycoKey. Recent genetic work has also suggested Schizogonium is similar to Prasiola (Rindi et al. 2007).

 

Habitat:

Terrestrial, widespread in temperate to polar regions, thriving near sources of fixed nitrogen (urine, bird guano).

Also marine upper tidal zone, epilithic, especially robust near sources of bird guano.
