Classification:

Franceia  Lemmermann  1898; 7 of 13 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013)

Order Chlorellales;  Family Oocystaceae

 

Morphology:

Solitary (rare 2-4 cells together) green cells with from 6 to more than 30 lengthy spines (up to 75 µm).  Several chloroplasts in older cells.

Habitat:

Widespread in freshwater plankton.
