Name derivation:

Four spherical cells (colony).

Classification:

Tetrasporopsis  Lemmermann ex Schmidle  1902;  1 of 5 species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Chromulinales;  Family Chrysocapsaceae

Morphology:

Colony with cells embedded in mucilage, in groups of four.  Have cell walls and a stima (eyespot) but lack contractile vacuoles. Spherical when viewed from the top but ellipsoidal when viewed from the side. Two chloroplasts found in each cell.

Similar genera:

Dermatochrysis is similar, but has a contractile vacuole and lacks cell walls and stigma (Entwisle and Andersen 1990).

Habitat:

Attached to submerged substrates in flowing water.
