Classification: |
Chroomonas Hansgirg 1885; 20 of 55 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).
Order Pyrenomonadales; Family Chroomonadaceae
Morphology: |
Photosynthetic biflagellate stage alternates with mucilaginous palmelloid colonies. Tubular gullet lined with two to four rows of ejectisomes. One chloroplast and pyrenoid. Color varies from blue to cyan to green depending on concentration of phycocyanin. May have a stigma. Only asexual reproduction by simple cell division is known (Guiry and Guiry 2013). The plasmalemma is covered with discrete hexagonal plates visible only ultrastructurally (Novarino and Oliva 1998; Noavarino 2003).
