Cryptomonas

Cryptomonas cf. ovata

Cryptomonas spp. are a favorite food of many grazing zooplankton such as Daphnia and Bosmina (Haney, personal communication).  Cells are most concentrated near the thermocline at light intensities < 10% of surface illumination (Baker 1973).
