Name derivation

 

Classification:

Stylodinium  Klebs  1912;  5 of 16 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Thoracosphaerales;  Family Oodiniaceae

 

Morphology:

Unicellular nonmotile cell during most of its life cycle, cell attached by a stalk to a sand grain.  Also has a flagellate stage.  The ultrastructure has been studied with emphasis on the apical stalk (Horiguchi and Yoshizawa-Ebata 2006).

 

Habitat:

Marine, sammolittoral (sand substrate).
