Name derivation:

Classification:

Scytosiphon  C. Agardh  1820;  7 of 69 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

 

Morphology:

Erect gametophytes 15 – 70 cm tall, 5-10 mm wide, tapering near base and apex.  Plurilocular gametangia are 3 – 10 µm in diameter and up to 65 µm long are tubular with regular constrictions that look somewhat like linked sausages.  Grow in parallel clusters (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Widespread marine habitat (Florida, North Carolina, Canadian Arctic to Brazil, eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Rad Sea, Pacific Ocean, Australia, Antarctica, Faeroe Islands and Denmark) (Ibid.).
