Name derivation:

 

 

Morphology:

Helicosphaera  Kamptner  1954;  4 of 37 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Zygodiscales;  Family Helicosphaeraceae

 

Morphology:

Ellipsoid unicells, 12 - 28 µm long and wide depending on species.  Apical opening.  Coccoliths are long elliptical placoliths (upper and lower ‘shields’ connected with a tube).
