Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Hymenomonas F.Stein, 1878;  9 of 16 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2015).

 

Morphology:

Unicells, either non-motile, or motile with two, subequal flagella and a non-emergent or short bulbous haptonema. Covered with hundreds of crown-shaped coccoliths overlying layers of circular organic scales, sometimes also with small elliptical scales.

 

Similar genera:

 

 

Habitat:

Freshwater and marine plankton. H. roseola is the only known freshwater coccolith, reported from the British Isles, Germany, Romania and U.S.A.
