Name derivation:

(L.) acantho spine, phora bearing

Classification:

Acanthophora  J.V. Lamouroux  1813;  7 of 26 spexcies descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Synonym Acanthochondria Weber-van Bosse 1910.

Morphology:

Brittle spiny thallus up to 25 cm tall with irregular branching, variable color from reddish brown to brown, green or yellow (Littler and Littler).

Similar genera:

Habitat:

Tropical marine habitats, widely distributed (Guiry and Guiry 2016).
