Skeletonema (Bacillariophyceae)

Skeletonema sp. from coast of New Hampshire USA
Considerable space separates adjacent cells in the trichome. Cells are linked together by silicaceous threads (thin spines) that appear to be "hooked together" midway between cells.

"Hooks" (arrow) on cell spines appear as dark spots midway between cells in this image. In this case the intercellular spaces are longer than the cells themselves. Spines arise from processes at the margin of the valves. (There is no central spine or thread.)
