Classification:

Terpinsoë   Ehrenberg

Order Biddulphiales   Family Biddulphiaceae

Morphology:

Although a centric filamentous diatom, with cells attached in a zig-zag pattern, a cell of Terpinsoë is elongate and essentially bilaterally symmetric in valve view (rather than radially symmetric).  Deep costae are curved on their distal or internal ends giving the appearance of musical notes when wseenin girdle view, hence the species T. musica.

Similar genera:

Tetracyclus has a similar outline in valve view.

Habitat:

Freshwater to brackish rivers;  rarely reported but presumable widely distributed (Stoermer and Julius 2003).
