Thalassiosira Cleve 1873; 121 of 235 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014). Definite rim on valve perimeter.
Morphology:
Chains of discoid cells held together by thin threads connecting valves in the center. Each cell has multiple discoid chloroplasts.
