Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Orthoseira  Thwaites  1848;  10 of 19 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Orthoseirales, Family Orthoseiraceae

Morphology:

Cylindrical cells, sometimes linked together forming short trichomes.  See description in Guiry and Guiry (2013).

Similar genera:

Melosira (not subaerial)

Habitat:

Subaerial associated with moss in damp areas.
