The cells typically have radial symmetry in ‘valve view’
A valve is the top or bottom of the silica frustule. ‘Valve view’ shows the surface of one of the valves
The cell may present itself in "girdle view"
The girdle is formed by the overlapping sides of the upper and lower valves, called the cingula
