Tabellaria (Bacillariophyceae)

Tabellaria sp. from NH USA
Note: the gelatinous ‘glue pads’ in each connecting corner holding the cells together

Note: the parallel septa lines that start from each end of the cell and stop before reaching each other in the middle. The septa are formed from intercalary bands that increase cell width and cell volume while maintaining wall strength.

Glue pads at cell ends are evident.

Tabellaria sp. from NH USA
Cell length to width ratio is large -- elongate cells. Glue pads are evident.

Typical zig-zag pattern of colony.  Here the cells are almost square, with a low length/width ratio.
