Name derivation:

(Gr.) Cteno- comb, -phora carrier

Unfortunately synonymous with the animal phylum Ctenophora ("Comb Jellies" of the ocean plankton).

Classification:

Ctenophora  (Grunow) D.M.Williams & Round, 1986;  Currently 1 of 7 species descriptions are accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2013).

Order Fragilariales;  Family Fragilariaceae
