Name derivation:

  Greek gomphos tooth, peg, bolt, bond; neis is derived from naus; Latin navis: ship (Silva 1980)

Classification:

Gomphoneis  Cleve  1894; 16 of 32 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Cymbellales;  Family Gomphonemataceae

Morphology:

Striations are doubly punctate, i.e. two rows of punctae in each stria.
